How pace is calculated

Pace is time divided by distance: 30 minutes over 5 km is 6:00 per kilometre. Speed is the inverse: 60 divided by the pace in minutes, so 6:00/km is 10 km/h. Strava's average pace uses moving time, so a run with auto-pause shows a faster pace than elapsed time would suggest.

If you are planning a run rather than analysing one, the button under the results opens the Fakepace builder with this pace preset — draw the route and the activity file uses it.

FAQ

What is a good running pace?
For most recreational runners 5:30–7:00/km is typical; sub-5:00/km over 10K is fast. Compare against your own recent runs rather than a chart.
Why is my Strava pace different from this?
Strava uses moving time and GPS-measured distance. Pauses, GPS drift and rounding all shift the displayed pace slightly.
Does the calculator work in miles?
Enter kilometres; the result shows pace per km and per mile. 1 mile = 1.609 km.
